Goal areas include providing a basis for reminiscence and life review, a distraction from physical pain and discomfort, opportunities for emotional expression, relief from anxiety and depression, as well as a sense of enjoyment and fulfillment. Additionally, music experiences can be leveraged to support the development of coping mechanisms and acceptance in end-of-life.

For caregivers, music therapy goals aim to provide psychoeducation on the benefits of music therapy interventions, respite from caregiver stress, and pre-bereavement support.
