Music Therapy in Schools and Early Intervention

  Music therapists aim to promote quality of life through non-threatening musical interventions and the therapeutic relationships which develops in the process. Goal areas include providing a basis for reminiscence and life review, a distraction from physical pain and discomfort, opportunities for emotional expression, relief from anxiety

  Music therapists aim to promote quality of life through non-threatening musical interventions and the therapeutic relationships which develops in the process. Goal areas include providing a basis for reminiscence and life review, a distraction from physical pain and discomfort, opportunities for emotional expression, relief from anxiety and depression, as well as a sense of enjoyment and fulfillment. Additionally, music experiences can be leveraged to support the development of coping mechanisms and acceptance in end-of-life. 

Lastly, music therapy can aide in the transition and release in a loved one's final hours. 


For caregivers, music therapy goals aim to provide psychoeducation on the benefits of music therapy interventions, respite from caregiver stress, and pre-bereavement support.

For nearly 40 years since the passage of Public Law 94-142, qualified music therapists have been providing music therapy as a related service to children with disabilities in schools and early intervention. Music therapists work in concert with students, parents, caregivers, faculty, and district administrators to enhance a child's educat

For nearly 40 years since the passage of Public Law 94-142, qualified music therapists have been providing music therapy as a related service to children with disabilities in schools and early intervention. Music therapists work in concert with students, parents, caregivers, faculty, and district administrators to enhance a child's education experience, and to support special education needs as identified in the child's Individualized Education Plan (IEP). Services are federally funded through the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) Part B & Part C. Music Therapy as a related service has been shown to:


  • Improve communication
  • Foster socialization
  • Promote cognitive functioning
  • Facilitate emotional expression
  • Develop motor and sensory functions
  • Encourage autonomy and independent decision-making

Initial Music Therapy Assessment

The initial music therapy assessment is required to establish whether music therapy services are appropriate and to develop individualized music therapy goals for treatment.

30 Minute Session
